FAQ’s
How much funding is available for my project?
You are entitled to claim up to 50% of the total costs of your project. This must be matched by your own funds. Payment “in kind” cannot be used.
How do I claim the money?
When you get final approval for the project you have to spend the money first before you can claim it back. It’s best to have some kind of funding plan in place before you apply for the funding. We would want some kind of proof that you will be able to afford to pay for the project first and then claim it back. You could speak to your bank manager about this to arrange a bridging loan, or find some alternative way to fund it until you claim the money back.
How long does the process take?
This will vary depending upon circumstances. Your application has to go through several approval procedures. The LAG meets every 6 weeks so, regardless of when your application is complete and sent in, it cannot be approved until the next meeting. If there are issues with your application or further details are needed, this can also delay the process. Please be aware that it could take upto 4 months or longer. We ask that you hit all deadlines, as a missed one will lead to further delays. There may also be a backlog of applications. We will, however, keep you informed of any developments if this happens.
Do I have to sign anything?
Yes, there is an extensive contract to protect both us and you. This contract will have clawback clauses should the funding be misappropriated. We will go through the contract with you though and make sure you understand what it is you are signing.
I’m not sure if my project is eligible?
Have a look here first. If you’re still unsure, please give the LEADER Project Manager a ring and they will give you any help or advice you need.
I’ve never filled out a funding application or completed a business plan before! What do I do?
Have a look at this guidance first in the how to apply section. If you’re still struggling you can speak to the LEADER Project Manager who will be happy to help. We may be able to put you in touch with someone who can help.
Am I guaranteed the funding? It seems like a lot of work to do if I’m not.
Unfortunately you are not guaranteed any funding even if you have completed the full application. LEADER funding is distributed through a competitive process. There is a limited budget and timescales apply. You also have to have approval from several separate bodies before the funding will be released. We will always try to steer you in the right direction and let you know at each stage of the process what has happened, but ultimately the decision to continue or not is up to you. It is possible that you will get to the final stage before having your project rejected, or you are offered a reduced amount of money, and we appreciate that this could be frustrating for you. However, due to the nature of the project, this is part of the processes and cannot be altered.
Can I start my project now?
Your project is only guaranteed the funding after you have signed the contract. Any work that takes place before this date will not be eligible for LEADER funding. This is one of the reasons that things like planning and architect costs are not eligible.
I’ve heard that funding for many public money projects is going to be cut. Is LEADER still operating?
At the moment we are still open for business and still taking applications. The project is likely to receive a reduced amount of funding for 2012 which will make the project extremely competitive. Please don’t let that put you off from making an application, but start thinking about the justification for receiving LEADER funding.
